It is a matter of pride that Government College, Shimla-6—a premier educational institution of Shimla—on the orders of the Govt. of Himachal Pradesh, has been declared a Centre of Excellence, vide notification No. EDN-A- Ja(1)-7/2005, dated 28-3-2006. This is in keeping with fulfilling the aspirations of pragmatic and enlightened parents seeking to provide their children an access to varied courses hitherto available only in some of the best Colleges in India.

Situated at the foothill of Jakhoo in sylvan surroundings, the lush green cedar and oaks remind one of the days of yore, when the jungle of concrete buildings had not defaced the Queen of Hills. This College takes pride in its rich history and heritage. The main building of the College, currently housing the Administrative Block, Science Block and the Computer Lab., was raised way back in 1869 as Himalayan Christian Orphanage. In 1872, it was occupied by the Mayo Industrial School for female orphans and girls of European descent. It was rebuilt at a grand cost of Rs. 73,545/-, considered a large amount in those days, and was opened on March 1, 1905 during the Lieutenant-Governorship of Sir Charles Rivoz, K.C.S.I. and the Episcopate of the Reverend George Alfred Lefroy, D.D., the third Bishop of Lahore. The credit for raising this imposing structure goes to the architect, A. Gaddock Esq. and the builders, Messrs. Rivett and Sons. Following the independence of India in 1947, the building was put to use as the B.Ed/B.T. College for Girls affiliated to the Panjab University, and it functioned thus till 1969. Govt. College Shimla-6 has the rare distinction of being the first Govt. College set up in the township of Shimla in 1969. It was then affiliated to the Panjab University, but a year later in 1970, when H.P. University was founded, it became affiliated to the latter. The College has trodden many miles since then and the number of students has increased from 250 to 2,221 in the session 2005-06. Easy accessibility from Sanjauli-Lakkar Bazaar and Circular Road is a remarkable feature of its locale.

"Aaroh Tamaso Jhotih”- May we rise from darkness to light, i.e., from ignorance to knowledge—the motto of this college sums up the concept of value-oriented education being imparted to the students. At present, the College offers courses in both Arts and Sciences. In Arts, there are 12 disciplines of Humanities and Social Sciences, including Physical Education. The faculty of Commerce, and Honours courses in some subjects in Arts and Science, will also be introduced in the session 2006-07. In the Sciences, this College provides the best of laboratory facilities for both Medical and Non-Medical streams.

Besides experienced, dedicated teaching faculty and efficient non-teaching staff, the College provides the best of facilities in every discipline, namely, well-equipped laboratories, a well-stocked library and a spacious Reading Room. Apart from academics, ample opportunities are provided to students for participation in co-curricular activities to help them develop healthy and harmonious personalities, fulfilling the ultimate aim of education. The College had the honour to host Group III items of Youth Festival, HPU, and Judo Championship during 2003-04; Group IV items of Youth Festival, HPU, and Basketball Championship during 2004-05; and Group IV item of Youth Festival, HPU, in 2005-06. There is also a well-equipped Gymnasium and efforts have been made to get a team of expert-coaches for sportspersons of the institution. The College also provides the best of board and lodging facilities for 70 students in a Hostel for boys. Internet and banking are the other facilities rendered by the institution for the convenience of students.

Sh. Virbhadra Singh, Hon’ble Chief Minister, H.P., laid the foundation-stone of the new Science Block on Sept. 22, 2004, and it is being constructed with the utmost speed. With its early completion, the long-cherished dream of students for a spacious auditorium, uncrowded class rooms and laboratories will materialize. As a bonanza for budding sportspersons, the process of extending the already-existing playground is on the verge of completion.

The College has maintained academic excellence over the years. The alumni of the College have made their mark as doctors, engineers, architects, academicians, artists, lawyers, judges, journalists and politicians. The institution remains committed to channel the energy of its scholars in the right direction, so that they add many more feathers in the cap of their Alma Mater.
