This is a premier institution of women education in North India. It was established in1977 when the erstwhile RPCSTDB Colllege was taken over by H.P.Govt and turned into a Govt. College exclusively for girl students. There were 919 students on rolls in the year 1978 and at present the number of students has risen upto 3750.The building of college is located at Elysium Hill. The name of institute was kept on the name of Lord Auckland's sister. The word 'Elysium' is a word from Greek language which means “a delightful place”. The word is quite appropriate for the hill with rolling emerald valleys and distant snow-capped mountains surrounding it. The college is a ten minute walk from the famous Ridge and can also be reached by local buses plying on the Circular road( Cart Road) near which it is located.

This site is quite The college is fairly large and has adequate infrastructural facilities.The seven storyed Science Block has spacious Lecture-Theatres, Staff Rooms for individual departments, well equipped Science and Home Science Laboratories and Auditorium. There is a proposal for the construction of new Administrative Block and new Arts Block, for which Rs i crore has been sanctioned by the Hon'ble Chief Minister. The existing Arts Block has ample number of Class Rooms, a Common Room for Girls, A general Staff Room and a Computer Room. The library is computerised and well stocked and includes a large reading room. The other basic facilities include canteen, dispensary,hostel, computer classes, internet , PCO and bamking facilities.
The institute offers Bachelor's Degree in three mainstreams of studies: Humanities, Science and Commerce. It offers and Honours Course in English. Sandhya Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (affiliated to the prestigious Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth , Lucknow) conducts a graduate level course in the classical music and post- graduate level course in classical Dance, as hobby classes in Music and Dance for the general public. Co-curricular activities like sports, cultural and literary excercises are encouraged along with NCC,NSS, career guidance and councelling, workshops and exhibitions.
